Presenter: Stephen “Jay” SanfordProgram Project Coordinator, SeniorBroward County SWIM Central
Since 2012 Mr. Sanford has supervised SWIM Central Program for Broward County. The Swim Central Program is a property tax funded water safety education program focusing on drowning prevention in the highest drowning area in the United States. Since he took over the program the number of schools participating have grown from 160 to over 200, and funding have grown from $553,100 to $675,000.
In addition, new programs have been implemented including a swim coupon program for children under the age of 5, and increased outreach with in the community. Since the Pandemic the coupon program has expanded to children under the age of 9 as those children would not have had the option to attend the traditional Swim Central Program due to COVID restrictions.
Annually, the SWIM Central program serves almost 25,000 children including those with special needs, at no additional cost to the parents. Children are taught in group lessons with ratios for neuro-typical students being 10 to 1 and lower ratios for special needs classes depending upon the needs of the students. During the current School Year Swim Central 48 schools sent students within their autism clusters to the program.
